Welcome to another week of celebrating authors and reading.
This week (and next!) we’ll be chatting with International Heat, a team of erotica and erotic romance novelists who have banded together to support and encourage one another on their quest for erotic domination… Ok, I might be exaggerating a little, but seriously the stories these fabulous authors write come with warnings! You know, those warnings that you sometimes read and think, “Hmmm, that warning sounds like just the kind of trouble I’d like to invite in!”
Certainly reader’s demand for the erotica genre seems set to continue; particularly within the digital/ebook marketplace.
Irrespective of whether you love it or hate it, some of the demand and popularity of the genre can be attributed to E.L. Jame’s Fifty Shades of Grey (FSoG). Not only did FSoG become the fastest-selling paperbook in history, it also was the first book to sell more than 1 million copies on the Amazon Kindle, thus transforming the way that women peruse their erotic reading. Author Sylvia Day remarked late last year, that the benefit of FSoG for the erotica genre at large is, “people finish and want to find something like it”2. This is great news for erotica novelists, who’ve been long undervalued, most notably with the recently penned term, ‘mommy or mummy-porn’ which denigrates the role that erotica can, and often does, provide its female readers.
Hodder & Stoughton assistant editor Harriet Bourton says, “Women are feeling liberated by the current trend of novels that were written with their total, unadulterated pleasure in mind.”1
With topics ranging from sex toys to bisexuality, BDSM to ménage; the erotica and erotic romance genre has it all. Ranging from sugary-sweet to scorchingly hot, this is a genre that can really open the eyes (perhaps legs!) of its readers, offering erotic lifestyle choices often an underlying scope of romance to the mix.
What erotica/erotic romance novel are you reading now? What’s your favourite novelist or novel in this genre?
