SPOTLIGHT ON… Momentum Books: Amy Andrews

Amy Andrews
Amy Andrews
Describe yourself in one word:
Pragmatic
What is your background with regard to writing?
39 books written and published across four different publishers both traditionally and digitally – Harlequin, Momentum, Entangled and Harper Collins.
When did you first begin writing with a view of embarking on a career as a published author?
I wrote my first book at 22. It’s subsequent rejection made me a *writer*. Made me determined to pursue my craft until a publishing house thought I was good enough to acquire. That was 12 years later!
Tell us about the first book you wrote
It was terrible. I’d written it for HMB, not a medical but the hero was a doctor and the heroine had been a victim of domestic abuse. I dragged it out a couple of years back, thinking, how bad can it be? The answer? Baaaaaad! But to this day I still love it to death because it showed me two things – that I could do it and that I needed to get help to improve my work which led me to Romance Writers of Australia.
What is your writing routine?
When I’m writing a book I write every day – I try to get 2k down a day but the truth is I usually start slow and end up pulling much bigger word counts as I head towards deadline!
Favourite snack whilst writing?
I try not to snack while writing – preferring to get up at set times for breaks and eat them but when I do I usually have punnets of cherry tomatoes or baby capsicums or cheese and nuts. There’s no way I can sit and snack on a bowl of MM’s or something like that – I don’t have great genetics and it would totally end up on my arse!
If you weren’t writing, what would you be doing?
I still work part-time as a nurse, which I love, so I guess I’d be doing that fulltime!
One thing you’d like readers to know about the romance genre…
it brings joy. And God knows this world needs some joy!
Number one thing to do on your bucket list?
Villa in Tuscany.
Biggest accomplishment to date:
From a writing perspective winning the 2010 Romantic Book of the Year award was an amazing moment.
What’s next for you?
More books! Continuing to write sexy, sassy romance with a HEA.
Confessions of an Author:
Is there something we’d be shocked to know about you?
I doubt it – I’m boringly staid!
What do you find easiest to write?
Dialogue.
And, the hardest?
Detailed technical scenes.
Favourite travel experience?
Amalfi coast in Italy with hubby and no kids!! J
Favourite fictional character:
Bridget Jones
Milk or dark chocolate?
Dark
Red, white, bubbly?
Depends on the weather – if its summer I like a cold white, in winter I love a good glass of red!
Salty or sweet?
Sweet – and doesn’t my butt know it!
Beach or mountains?
Beach.
Give or receive?
Give.
