AUSSIE MONTH with Lisa Heidke

Describe yourself in one word:
Fortunate

Tell us about The Callahan Split:
My latest novel, The Callahan Split is about sisters, love, lies and loss. Samantha and Annie are sisters, best friends and tennis partners. But when Annie’s new boyfriend proposes, the sisters’ personal and professional relationship quickly spirals.

What inspired this novel?
I’m not quite sure, but once I got the idea for writing a story about tennis playing sisters, I became fixated. I wanted to explore their professional and personal relationship on the circuit – how similar/different Samantha and Annie were, what motivated them, and how they each responded to the stress of constantly being under the media spotlight.  Most importantly, there was the romantic aspect of Samantha and Annie’s lives. I wanted the women to be believably different when it came to lust, romance and falling in love.  And then what happens when it all falls apart? How do they cope? I loved researching this story. It was a lot of fun.

What are you reading right now?
I’m a bit obsessed with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. Am currently reading book 10, The Hard Way – Pure escapism and a change from the genre I write. As they say, ‘a break is as good as a holiday’.

Number one thing to do on your bucket list?
I could say run a marathon, but that will never happen so I’ll say travel the world. I still have many countries to explore.

Best thing about being an Aussie?
Our fabulous coastline, going to the beach in January, and the abundance of seafood and mangoes.

What you want readers to know about the romance genre?
Romance fiction is relevant, sharp, creative, and encompasses many themes including historical/futuristic settings, urban/rural settings, crime and thrillers. The romance genre is diverse.  But of course there is a central love story and hopefully an optimistic and emotionally satisfying ending.

What have you got in store for your readers in 2016?
I’m planning a sequel (or two) for a couple of my books.

What were your big achievements of 2015?
Releasing It Started With a Kiss in January with A&U and then striking out on my own with The Callahan Split in September – my favourite book so far.

The Callahan Split
Lisa Heidke

In tennis, as in life, nothing ever goes truly to plan.

Samantha and Annie Callahan are successful doubles champions — the toast of the Olympics, Wimbledon, and Flushing Meadow. But their winning partnership spirals out of control when Annie’s new boyfriend announces their engagement at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Bear, the sisters’ coach, guides Annie as much as she’ll allow. But when she insists on dropping Samantha in favour of a singles career, her game and rankings plummet.
Samantha is left floundering. Disillusioned, her only sweet spot is the growing passion between her and Bear. Amidst rising anger and betrayal, Samantha completely changes both their destinies when she does the unthinkable after a devastating Wimbledon loss.

The sisters are driven to create new lives by confronting the past and taking control of the present. But can Samantha and Annie both win?
