AUSSIE MONTH with Vicki Connellan

Describe yourself in one word:
Relaxed

Tell us about Beneath Jalinda Skies:
My latest novel is titled Beneath Jalinda Skies. It’s set on a cattle station in the South Australian outback. The book follows the story of Annie and her son Adam who leave home late one night in search of somewhere to hide out and heal. Five days later they find themselves arriving at Jalinda Station, home of Brock Taylor and his son Logan. This is essentially a story of four people and how they interact with each other as they learn to trust and love. It’s a moving story that, if I’ve done my job as a writer, will invoke tears, laughter, smiles and hopefully the need to keep reading until you reach the end. It will be available mid December 2015.

What inspired this novel?
I had the main male character, Brock in my head first. He was a lonely stockman with a son and he needed company so I came up with Annie and Adam. It was around the time of Domestic Violence Awareness month and there were posters and brochures around work relating to this. It’s a subject that is often left alone because it can be considered sensitive but that doesn’t make it any less real. When the book is published it will contain links to services that provide help or advice for people who find themselves in a situation like Annie’s.

What are you reading right now?
I normally read romance novels, most recently I finished the Wishes Series by Aussie author G J Walker-Smith (brilliant books) but at the moment I’m reading The Crossroad, the memoirs of Mark Donaldson VC, he’s the first Australian since 1969 to receive the Victoria Cross, our  countries highest award for bravery. It’s an awesome read, very different from the romance novels I normally get lost in.

Number one thing to do on your bucket list?
Go on a girls ‘epic road trip’ to America with my girlfriends and stay on a dude ranch in Texas J. I don’t care if I’m 80 when I get to do this, as long as the girls and I are still kicking we’ll have a good time.

Best thing about being an Aussie?
I love our weather and I love the laid back weekends, dinner on the barbeque, relaxing with family and friends.

What you want readers to know about the romance genre?
I guess I‘d like them to know that not all romance books are the same. Sure they generally have a happy ending, but it’s what’s in the guts of the story that makes the difference.

What have you got in store for your readers in 2016?
I’m hoping to do a sequel to one of my books from 2015, The Hired Help. It will follow the story of Brett, Callie’s brother. I won’t say any more because I don’t want to give the story away. There will also be more in the Jalinda Station series. I fell in love with all of the characters on the station so I’d really like to continue their stories.

What were your big achievements of 2015?
It would have to be publishing my first book, Meant to Be. It was something that I’d wanted to do for years and it was such a great feeling to make it a reality.

Forgiven
Vicki Connellan

Kyle was in the wrong place at the wrong time and when things happened that changed the course of his life forever, life, as he knew it ended. Now he’s home and looking to get things back on track. All he wants is to make his Gran proud, to find a job and settle back into a normal life. Falling in love with Maggie, his Gran’s neighbour and friend wasn’t part of the plan but it’s happening and he can’t stop it, no matter how much he tries.

Forgiven is the story of love, life, forgiveness and eventually happiness.
