AUSSIE MONTH with Elyse Huntington

Describe yourself in one word:
Cheerful

Tell us about My Dark Duke:
My Dark Duke is about James Cavendish, the Duke of Trent, who is rumoured to have been involved in the death of his wife. He meets Lady Alethea Sinclair, an impudent beauty who has refused seven offers of marriage. The novel is about how their relationship develops, and how Alethea’s love finally helps James to conquer the shadows of his past.

What inspired this novel?
Believe it or not, this book started out being posted in a fanfiction website. It’s based on a contemporary TV crime drama, but I love historical romance, and love my two characters, so I thought, why not? It turned out to be a really popular fanfic, which was a great motivation to keep writing.

What are you reading right now?
Break Me: A Stepbrother Romance by Julie Kriss

Number one thing to do on your bucket list?
Stay in a bungalow in the Maldives, the ones that are perched over the amazingly blue sea.

Best thing about being an Aussie?
The complete lack of irreverence we have on many ‘serious’ topics which is part of our great sense of humour.

What you want readers to know about the romance genre?
I think when you say romance novels, people immediately think of Mills and Boons or the novels from the 1990’s that feature Fabio and his fabulous torso! I want to tell readers, especially, non-romance readers, that the romance genre is so very different today, and so varied that the number of sub-genres are mind-blowing. That these novels are written by incredibly intelligent and accomplished women. That there is absolutely nothing wrong in wanting to read stories which makes you feel good and redeem your faith in the power of love, especially given the world that we live in today. Romance novels are to me comfort food for the brain.

What have you got in store for your readers in 2016?
Fingers crossed that my first contemporary romance will be available as an e-book!

What were your big achievements of 2015?
The highlight was definitely having My Dark Duke published by Destiny Romance, my first book to be published. I have only been writing a few years and I was extraordinarily fortunate that an editor at Destiny loved my book. Oh, and I just have to mention I self-published a novella, The Duke’s Gamble, which I’m very proud of as well.

My Dark Duke

Since his notorious wife died in mysterious circumstances, rumours about James, the handsome Duke of Trent, have scandalized society. Now, he must marry again – but finding an eligible woman willing to overlook his past won’t be easy.

Defiantly single, Lady Alethea Sinclair has already turned down six offers of marriage. She prefers living on her own terms and refuses to answer to any man. Yet when Alethea meets the seductive and enigmatic Duke she finds herself strangely drawn to him.

Intrigued by Alethea’s defiance of society’s expectations, James is instantly taken with the willful beauty and soon they are enjoying a playful flirtation. And when circumstances force them into a comprising situation, he does the honourable thing and marries her.

But adjusting to the constraints of marriage doesn’t come easily to the rebellious Alethea and, despite their growing feelings for each other, the Duke’s troubled past keeps getting in the way. Can they learn to trust each other and give love a chance before it’s too late?

A steamy Georgian romance about desire, the importance of staying true to yourself and the power of the past to cast a shadow on the present.
