AUSSIE MONTH with Helene Young

Describe yourself in one word:
Loyal

What is your background with regard to writing?
I’ve always been a story-teller! With book number six due for release in June 2015 I think I may be brave enough to call myself an author.

Tell us about Safe Harbour:
Safe Harbour is a ‘friends to lovers’ story with a whole lot of small town angst and opens with a dramatic ocean rescue in the middle of a storm. I loved writing this story.

What inspired this novel?
A chance visit to Cooktown and a meeting with the local policeman who ran the PCYC set me to thinking ‘what if?’ I loved exploring the idea of a couple of ambitious people following their dreams to the big smoke, but ultimately coming home to their small town so they could make a difference.  It’s set around Agnes Waters and The Town of 1770 on the Queensland coast near Bundaberg. Capt G and I found ourselves trapped in the Burnett River on Roobinesque with a strong wind warning when we were sailing from Brisbane to Cairns. We spent a week exploring the area and Safe Harbour is a tribute to the guts and determination of all those loclas who endured the floods and devastation.

What are you reading right now?
Fiona McIntosh’s Nightingale

Number one thing to do on your bucket list?
Sail to Broome!

Best thing about being an Aussie?
We live in the most spectacular country and enjoy unparalleled privilege and freedom.

What you want readers to know about the romance genre?
There’s always room for optimism in our lives.

What have you got in store for your readers in 2015?
Northern Heat stars a character from Safe Harbour and is set in and around Cooktown. With a cyclone bearing down on the close-knit community, my hero, Conor, finds himself trapped by raging floodwaters and battling a psychopath hell bent on revenge. This is a redemption story and after everything Conor’s been through he deserves to find love again.  Do Dr Kristy Dark and her teenage daughter, Abby, have room in their hearts for him? I hope so!

What were your big achievements of 2014?
Taking on the role of Regional Flying Manager Qld for Qantaslink has pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it’s very rewarding being responsible for 260 pilots. The learning curve has been vertical… Managing to write my sixth book in the middle of all that has been challenging, but I’ve scraped in on my deadlines!

Safe Harbour
Helene Young

When Darcy Fletcher drags a handsome sailor from a stricken yacht, she finds herself drawn into his mysterious world.  Having saved his life can she now rescue him from his dark past? Or will that endanger all she holds most dear?

Noah, keeper of the peace and guardian of the Banskia Cove secrets, can’t tell Darcy the real reason this man has washed up on their shores. If she knew the links between the stranger and her own dysfunctional family, she’d flee the Cove and he’d lose her love for good.

As they take refuge in an old whaling station, only one thing is certain – by morning, no one will be the same again. Lies will surface, hearts will break, and not all will find safe harbour.
