CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS with the Naughty Ninjas: Roz Groves

Roz Groves

What is your background with regard to writing?
I’ve written here and there since I was a child. My childhood was littered with little stories and made-up people.

When did you first begin writing with a view of embarking on a career as a published author?
I am yet to be published, however what has put me back on the path to wanting to be published is becoming a reviewer. After I started my blog in late 2012 and began reading all these amazing books, it really hit home for me that this is something that I want to do as well.

What is your writing routine?
Currently, my writing time is limited to lunch times at work, children’s bath-time and when my girl is asleep. I am an inveterate planner at heart, however I tend to throw the words out on to the page and edit on the fly.

Favourite snack whilst writing?
I’m partial to cheese Twisties…oh! and Maltesers (why do they put a reseal label on those packets? It’s not as if they are going to get closed.)

If you weren’t writing, what would you be doing?
What I do now – inhabiting a grey cubicle of doom in corporate land, as an Executive Assistant. That, child-wrangling and running my review blog.

What do you find easiest to write? And, the hardest?
I breeze through the descriptive stuff usually, but I find it harder to write dialogue sometimes. I like reading dialogue that sounds like real people talking, but for some reason, find it a little difficult to write myself.

Tell us about the first book you wrote:
I think the first thing I ever wrote was a gory murder story when I was maybe 9 or 10. I watched a lot of true crime shows – I was a little ghoulish in my younger days.

One thing you’d like readers to know about the romance genre…
From contemporary to paranormal, from the depths of a Viking winter to the heady heights of Regency England, there is something there for everyone to enjoy – no two books are the same.

Ten quickies:

Milk or dark chocolate? Both, in large quantities. But I can’t do the dark chocolate that tastes like dust.

Red, white, bubbly? Give me a nice glass of Sauv Blanc any day! I won’t turn down any wine really.

Salty or sweet? I prefer savoury over sweet, but I could happily ease off the salt – except for chicken salt. Pack that stuff on like a champ.

Beach or mountains? I love the beach, but the whole snow on the mountains thing is a big thing for me – I am pretty good at après-skiing.

Give or receive? It’s lovely to do a little of both, but it’s always nice to see someone appreciate something you’ve given them (oh dear, I’m beginning to sound like a self-help book).

Facebook or Twitter? Twitter. It forces me to be more creative with my words.

Romance or erotica (for reading and/or writing)? Both for reading, romance for writing

Dog or cat? I love both, but I am a cat person at heart.

Summer or winter? Summer. I live in Melbourne, winter here is not my favourite time.

Star-gazing or storm-watching? Storm-watching.

  1. Thank you for letting me be the first cab off the Ninja rank. I had a lot of fun answering these questions. Can’t wait to see what the Naughty Ninjas themselves come up with!

  2. Gorgeous photo Roz! These posts are going to be so much fun J’aimee – thank you again for the generous invite to visit!

  3. Yes, it is a lovely photo, I agree with Lily. And I agree with you on the Twisties and the Maltesers (the reseal thing is just a corporate attempt to look health-conscious, so we don’t all sue them when we get diabetes). Looking forward to when you start writing 🙂

  4. Hey Roz,
I’m pretty fond of cheese Twisties too. And hubby loves Maltesers. I’m one who’d use the reseal tag. I didn’t know you could inhale chocolate until I met my hubby! I’m lucky if I can finish one malteser before he has the whole bag gone. The quick or the hungry in our place 🙂

    Cate xo
