CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS with the Naughty Ninjas: Georgina Penney

What is your background with regard to writing?
I’m a Jill of all trades but I was lucky enough to study Literature and Communication and Cultural Studies at university and then headed in a completely different direction towards a contemporary history PhD for a couple of years before re-discovering my love of romance while living in Saudi Arabia in 2008.

When did you first begin writing with a view of embarking on a career as a published author?
About four years ago. I sat down and wrote my first manuscript (Otherwise known as “The Abomination”) and made every layman’s mistake you could imagine. It was a brilliant, humbling experience and helped pave the way for some much, much better work!

What is your writing routine?
I pretty much sit down at my computer the minute after I make my morning cup of tea. The rest of the day goes as follows: Write a bit… Facebook. Write a bit… Twitter. Write a bit… oooohh what’s on YouTube? You get the idea… Generally I don’t let myself off the hook until I’ve either got my word count done or my pages edited for the day.

Favourite snack whilst writing?
Rice crackers slathered in peanut butter. They’re healthy… honest!

If you weren’t writing, what would you be doing?
I’d probably be the scary bake sale lady for the local women’s group or something similar. My expat visa here in Brunei prohibits me from working so that’d leave a lot of room for insanity.

What do you find easiest to write? And, the hardest?
Dialogue. I absolutely love to write dialogue. I find the hardest thing is not so much writing but realising what I’m writing is not on track, giving up and starting that bit again. That involves a whole lot of swearing.

Tell us about the first book you wrote
Now this depends if we’re talking at my first ever go, “The Abomination” as it shall be known, or my first real novel, Unforgettable You. I’ll go with the latter shall I? Because you really don’t want to be bored hearing about the first. Unforgettable You is the prequel to my current release Irrepressible You and it’s the tale of a kickass lady who works on oil rigs who comes home to find that her childhood crush has moved into her apartment.

One thing you’d like readers to know about the romance genre…
It’s so diverse! Really, really diverse. Romance is in every genre, it’s the glue that ties most narratives together and the romance genre is just one giant petri dish where the best stories evolve and get better.
