MEET MY MUSE: Nicolette Hugo

Unchained Vice Series

Meet My Muse with Nicolette Hugo

The Unchained Vice series is a collection of erotic stories that are loosely linked by characters having cameo roles across different books.  The result is a diverse range of stories threaded together by an underlying theme of kink and BDSM elements.

The key word is diverse. Which brings me to my muse, because if I had to name him it would be Random. I’d also describe him as a dark bunny, but a bit more of that later …

For my first book, The Arrangement, I had this idea of two people falling in love but coming at it from very different places (vanilla vs. kink) and it was interesting to me to see how they struggle through that ‘clash of cultures’. The second story, Exhibition, was purely because I had a character cameo and later a scene in the first book that I wanted more of – a sexy Dominant photographer and a girl tied on a St. Andrews Cross as a guestbook for people to sign-in. I just knew they had to be together, like lubricant and anal sex (see dark bunny talking there). For my current work-in-progress, a friend asked me to write a book from the Dom’s perspective and Random said, “sure, but he has to be for hire … by a couple.”

Once we’ve got the story idea, I like to uncover my character’s kink. For me when writing characters with kink, understanding their sexuality is a very large part of understanding their nature.  Random likes to reveal this in visual flashes – bedroom teasers that are up-close and personal, and because he is dark, he likes to throw out the confronting scenes first so that I spend the rest of the book wondering how to make these scenes work for the reader. It’s a bit of a leap of faith really …

From that point the flashes keep coming … in random order for random stories. I have three books swimming in my head at the moment.  I’m learning to adapt my writing style accordingly and write in jigsaw fashion just diligently capturing the scenes and knowing they will somehow click together. I generally know the key turning points for my plot and I use that to guide me while fleshing out a scene map.

The scenes themselves happen out of the blue and are quick. But generally I can recall a flash and settle in to explore, kind of like being a cameraman on a movie set. It’s purely visual. I do get sound bites but that normally happens in pitch black, and I have to work through how they overlay onto the visuals.

And yes, I have a living, breathing muse too … but he’s another story.

Nell Harper’s got her life all figured out:

Build a successful law career, find Mr. Right, then have 2.3 kids and a white picket fence. Everything is going to plan until a handsome stranger stops her from stepping in front of a speeding car.

Vincent Mason, rising politician, not only rescues Nell from death but from her safe but predictable life as he introduces her to the darker pleasures of domination and submission. What starts as a six month arrangement of sexual liberation turns into a deeper emotional exploration and Nell soon finds herself letting go of preconceived ideas of love and lust.

But can Nell trust Vincent enough to truly surrender herself?

And can she trust herself enough to listen to what her heart truly wants?
