Tell Us Your Backstory with Anna Campbell

I’ve always loved books, and my early taste for romance was set when I fell in love with fairy stories like Cinderella and Snow White and Sleeping Beauty. My preference for happy endings started there!

When you love books so much, it’s a natural progression to try to write your own. I started my first novel, an Enid Blyton rip-off about horse-napping (horses and EB were my two obsessions at the time) in grade 3. I fiddled with a lot of stories, until in the break between high school and starting university, I finished a novel, a historical romance set during the 100 Years War. Sadly unpublishable. But still – huzzah!

I mucked around for another few years before I decided to try to write Mills and Boons. And I did, eight of them, but none came close to publication. Then I mucked around for another thirteen years without submitting anything to a publisher. I wouldn’t recommend my career path to anyone!

All in all, there was a 27 year gap between finishing the medieval story and selling Claiming the Courtesan to Avon in America in 2006. This month marks my 10^th anniversary since the life-changing phone call saying I’d sold.

The funny thing about selling CTC, which is dark and sexy and very emotional, is that I’d decided at that stage that, if I ever got published (and I’d pretty much given up hope), it would be in Regency romantic comedy which I felt was a good match with my natural voice. I’ve edged back toward comedy in recent years. I can’t resist a joke or two!

Since 2006 I’ve been a full-time writer and I’ve had ten novels books published by Avon HarperCollins and Grand Central Hachette. My work is published in 17 languages. A dream come true, as you can imagine.

In 2014, when I came to the end of the Sons of Sin series (Seven Nights in a Rogue’s Bed, A Rake’s Midnight Kiss, What a Duke Dares, and A Scoundrel by Moonlight, plus novellas Days of Rakes and Roses and Three Proposals and a Scandal), I felt like a break from long, complicated stories. So lately I’ve had a wonderful time writing novellas, which, thanks to the digital publishing boom, have become commercial again.

I’ve had particular fun with a series called the Dashing Widows, featuring three very different women who strike up a friendship in Regency London, and discover love where they least expect it with three gentlemen just as dashing as they are. The latest release (30^th April) is Winning Lord West, a reunion story between Helena, Countess of Crewe, and the rakish Lord West. This completes this particular trilogy’s arc (the others are The Seduction of Lord Stone and Tempting Mr. Townsend).

The Dashing Widows have received such a great reception, I’m planning at least another three. After all, there’s dashing to be done – and I know the widows to do it!
