Tell Us Your Backstory with L.A. Larkin
Hi AusRom Today followers, I’m L.A. Larkin and I write thrillers – with a difference. There’s all the action and adventure you’d expect, but my latest thriller, Devour, is the first in a series of novels with a female central character, which, for this particular style of thriller, is rare. Olivia Wolfe is an investigative journalist who travels the world, tracking down and exposing criminals, cover-ups and corruption. Wolfe is a resilient and resourceful heroine with a dark past, and a passion to protect the innocent from harm. She’s supported by an intriguing cast of male characters: a retired detective, a Russian army deserter and possible spy, her cantankerous editor and, ultimately, an officer from Counter Terrorism Command.
What’s more, in this novel there’s a can-he-or-can’t-he be trusted love interest in the character of Vitaly Yushkov. I should clarify that the ‘trust’ we’re talking about here is not about his honourable intentions or his fidelity, but about whether he’s going to betray her to the Russian SVR (which used to be known as the KGB) and possibly kill her. He’s a man of many secrets who is either an assassin or a wronged man. You’ll have to read Devour to find out which.
Thrillers aren’t known for their erotic sex scenes, but there’s one in Devour. I read thrillers all the time and am often disappointed that the love scene is little more than a passionate embrace and then a cut to the next morning. I felt that to avoid such a scene in Devour would be failing the reader: it is a natural part of the story and of the characters’ development. I think Olivia Wolfe may challenge of few people’s perceptions of what to expect in an action and conspiracy thriller, and I hope that both male and female readers enjoy following Wolfe’s adventures in future books. I’d love to know what AusRom Today followers think of it, so please let me know:

Devour is about a scientific team in Antarctica drilling down through three kilometres of ice to reach an ancient subterranean lake because they believe it contains microbial life that’s never seen the light of day or been in contact with humans. They little realise the catastrophe they are about to unleash. Sabotage is followed by murder and a team of Russians arrive who are not what they seem. Wolfe’s journey will take her from Antarctica’s forbidding wind-swept ice sheets, to a top-secret military base in the Nevada desert, where she will ultimately face a man who would obliterate civilisation.
Published by Constable / Hachette Australia, it is available in paperback and ebook from 12 July 2016 in Australia and New Zealand. Then in January 2017, Devour is available on general release, including the UK.
