Reviewer Spotlight: Smart Bitches Trashy Books

Tell us a little more about Smart Bitches Trashy Books:
Smart Bitches Trashy Books is a website that specializes in reviewing romance novels, and the women who read and write them. Our goal is to connect romance readers to one another, and to the books they want to read. We also have a weekly podcast, which is produced with DearAuthor.com, called the DBSA Romance Fiction Podcast. “DBSA” stands for Dear Bitches Smart Authors, a pastiche of our names, but iTunes had a problem with the name so we had to go with the Most Boring Initials. SBTB also offers a weekly newsletter of our books on sale posts, if you’re looking to increase your library of books and you have a limited budget (you can subscribe here).

What prompted the creation of Smart Bitches Trashy Books?
The site was co-founded by Candy Tan and myself (Sarah), after a long email conversation about how much we liked romances, how few reviews there were for the genre, and how tired we were of taking crap insults about our reading material. Now I am the mastermind of the site, along with RedHeadedGirl, Elyse, Carrie Sessarego, and Amanda, who help me keep the mayhem going strong.

What can readers expect when visiting Smart Bitches Trashy Books?
Readers can expect intelligent critical discussion, silliness, reviews, cover commentary, and a warm and welcoming community of romance fans.

Can readers become involved with Smart Bitches Trashy Books?
Absolutely! One thing I’m ferociously proud and protective of is the community that hangs out with us at SBTB each day. We are a site where you should feel safe and welcome in the comments, and even if we disagree, most of the time we do so respectfully. So if you wish to comment on an entry or ask a question, you’re very welcome to do so. You can also email me if you need recommendations or want to rant about a book that you loathed, or sing praises of a book that rocked your world.

What’s next for you/ Smart Bitches Trashy Books?
We have a new design launching very soon, which will not only provide a mobile responsive design for the site, but will also include a new and more robust search feature. Plus, our site will be 10 years old in January 2015, and I’m very excited about that.

What are your top five favourite Aussie romance books of 2014 so far?
Oh, gracious. That requires that I remember titles! And I’m so bad at that. Oh, the shame. I can tell you that I wish more readers were aware of how exceptional authors like Racheal Johns, Sarah Mayberry, and Anne Gracie are. They’re tremendously talented.

All-time favourite character?
There is no way I could name one. I’m sorry!

One thing you’d like readers to know about the romance genre…
The romance genre is full of smart, clever, and terrific books written by smart, clever women, and we welcome anyone who’d like to try a romance. I can usually recommend one based on what books people have loved, and they often come back for more recommendations – which is the best feeling.

What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
It’s going to be better than you could possibly imagine. Keep going.

Number one thing to do on your bucket list:
Oh, boy. That list changes a lot. And I don’t like to delay my gratifications if I can avoid doing so! One thing I want to do in the future is visit countries I haven’t experienced yet, like Japan, Argentina, Peru, Norway, Iceland, and Sweden. The list of places I wish to go is very long indeed!
