Tell us about Friday Freebie book If I Kissed You
Raised by a pair of hopeless hippies, Nell O’Connor had to grow up quickly. But now her father, awash in whisky, has handed her the reins of his Irish pub. After obliterating every trace of Ireland, Nell has transformed it into a smart, and trendy bar. Business is booming but, outside of work, things aren’t going so smoothly.
When gorgeous musician Declan Gaffney arrives, it’s clear he’s definitely not Nell’s type. He’s Irish (therefore must be feckless and unreliable), he sings romantic Irish ballads (which Nell hates) and his nomadic lifestyle reminds her of some of the most painful parts of her childhood.
After Declan helps Nell out of a tricky situation, her father takes a shine to him and starts matchmaking. And when her aura-reading mother turns up, Nell’s carefully ordered life is thrown into chaos. She’s losing control but the biggest shock of all is yet to come …
In a story that shines a light on the unusual forms family can take, Nell must accept that sometimes love takes you in unexpected directions.
What inspired this book?
I was at a concert a couple of years ago (Damien Leith if you must know!) and when the warm-up act walked on stage my jaw dropped. Forget Damo, whose voice I love to bits and who has a lovely way about him, but this guy screamed appeal in every way possible: fabulous voice, Black Irish good looks and that easy banter we associate with the Irish. As I sat listening to him the first line of the story that would become If I kissed You drifted into my head: “The last thing Nell O’Connor needed was an Irishman sitting in her bar and singing about love.” From there, I just had to know why.
Who are the main characters and why will we love them?
Nell has largely brought herself up so she’s a real go-getter. She’s organised, resilient and has very firm ideas about what she doesn’t want in a man. And then she meets Irishman Declan Gaffney who ticks every box on her ‘need not apply’ list. He’s got an unusual past and has made a painful decision to leave his old life behind. Oh, and he’s sexy and has a guitar J
For you, what’s the best thing about Fridays?
Apart from the obvious – the beginning of the weekend! – my husband and I often pull up stumps work-wise about 3pm on Fridays and head off to have some tapas and wine. Friday also means anticipation, thinking about the more leisurely things I’ll be doing over the weekend. It always includes cooking, some entertaining and, most weekends, catching live music.
What’s coming up next for you? I have a Christmas novella out in early December. It’s an outback story of healing and finding love a second time around.
