Tell Us Your Backstory with Elizabeth M Darcy

Tell Us Your Backstory with Elizabeth M Darcy

When I was fresh off the boat from London, UK many years ago, I had a lot of trouble understanding what people were saying. I know we speak the same language but the phrasing and colloquialisms are very different. Thinking back now, I must have looked like a complete idiot standing up in front of a class trying to teach a bunch of kids, when half the time I couldn’t understand a word they were saying. No doubt, they couldn’t understand me either.

Seeing the funny side of my early time in Queensland, I called on my memories to create Emily Perkins in Winnawarra. I gave her an offer she couldn’t refuse —The chance to own a share of a multi-million dollar cattle station, the only catch being, she had to stay for one year.

Emily arrives in Australia convinced, a wild beast or reptile will either bite or eat her and that kangaroos run wild down the main streets. She is a little apprehensive when she arrives in Broome, hot bedraggled and more than a little confused by the rugged Doug Macgregor. He takes her to Winnawarra Station, a mythical place I created and set in the Kimberley and her life changes forever.

Why the Kimberley? My husband is an artist of Outback landscapes and we spent thirty years living in the bush. Australia is so vast and has a beautiful diversity, as I’m sure you know, from rolling green pastures along the coast, to desert and rainforest in the Outback. I wanted to share those places with my readers and take them on a journey of the Outback.

I also wanted them to see the funny side of how I felt when I came face to face with some of the people I met when I first arrived in Australia. You might find Emily’s take of things a little strange but trust me, I spent the first six months living here in a daze. I might add that I love the Aussie accent, I think Aussie men are the sexiest men on Earth.

I could have written a simple love story but I didn’t want to make life easy for either of my main characters. Doug could have been just a handsome, strong, bronzed cattleman— and he is all of those things but I wanted something different, so I made him an ex-chopper pilot shot down in Afghanistan and suffering from PTSD. He is rough and tough but has a heart of gold.

I loved writing Emily’s character. You see not being content with dumping her on a cattle station in the middle of nowhere and falling for a man with problems of his own, I gave her a murder to solve then just to stir up the pot a bit more I added a stalker to the mix.

Winnawarra is a romance, filled with a taste of the Outback and has a touch of mystery and a lot of suspense. I hope you will enjoy my story. I can’t wait to finish another in this series.

Best wishes,
Elizabeth M Darcy.
