WIP Me Inspired
Breathless for You – Outback Skies Book One
Yep, my current WIP is the first book in a new series. A brand new series. It feels weird writing that, because since 2012, I’ve been working on one series: Heart of Fame. But now, after eight books, that series is finished. The eighth book, Blackthorne, releases in October and after that, the world I started with Nick Blackthorne and Tropical Sin is done.
Wow, just typing that kinda makes my head spin a little. Give me a second to catch my breath.
Of course, this new book, the first book in the Outback Skies series, is kinda sorta connected to the Heart of Fame series. Kinda. A little. But I’m blaming my editor for that. After she read Blackthorne at the beginning of February she Skyped me straight away (which meant a 1am call, cause she’s in Israel and I’m in Australia *grin*) and demanded I write Matt Corvin’s story. And because I’m a very obedient author, I said okay.
And now here we are.
I’m actually a little ashamed to say I’m only 4,000 words into it (shhhh, don’t tell my editor) but oh man, am I loving it already.
Check out the first line:
Walking into the Outback Skies pub, in the small town of Wallaby Ridge, a place so stereotypical Australian Outback it could have been used in tourism marketing, Matt Corvin M.D. wished like hell he could have a beer.
Okay, it’s not high art, and as far as first lines goes, it’s probably pretty boring (and I suspect in serious need of an editor), but you know what it does for me? Something I haven’t had for eight books. It slams me down in a new setting, with a character that’s not a rock star or an actor or a Hollywood writer. It gives me a sense of place and frustration with a character whom, I have to say, I was pretty bloody horrible to in Blackthorne. And this guy, this doctor, is a niiice guy. He deserves a romance even if he’s never going to get a beer (I plan on a running joke throughout the entire series where something or someone always stops Matt from getting that beer he so desperately wants). Every time I close my eyes I can see him, and he looks like this…
What do you think? Cute?
I am stupidly excited about Breathless for You (there’s a reason for the title, but I’m going to be a horrible tease and not tell you) and the whole new series. Outback Skies is going to be something new for me, and I love that. I love that I have no real map for this world yet. I love that these characters are rushing at me so fast I can barely keep up with them. And most of all, I love writing…
Breathless for You
In the Australian Outback town of Wallaby Ridge, there’s a pub called Outback Skies. On the last Friday night of every month, four men from very different backgrounds meet up to share a beer and catch up on the madness of their lives. Matt Corvin, doctor for the Royal Flying Doctors Service; Evan Alexander, aviation firefighter; Ryan Taylor, helicopter stock mustering pilot; and Charlie Baynard, Senior Constable of the Air Police Wing.
Four men who spend their working hours in the air; flying across the vast distances of the Australian Outback as part of their job.
Four men who know how emotionally messed-up life can be, who have gone through their own personal hells and are seeking refuge from their pain in the arid centre of the country.
Four men who are all about to have their worlds turned upside down.
And when you live and work in the Aussie Outback, getting your world turned upside down can only mean one thing…things are going to get hot.
