Describe yourself in one word:
Passionate

What is your background with regard to writing?
I have been reading love stories for as long as I can remember and when I ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry James The Brontë sisters, etc. during my Honours studies, I was hooked for life. Writing about happy endings seemed to be the next logical step.

When did you first begin writing with a view of embarking on a career as a published author?
One of the Afrikaans publishers in South Africa ran a writing competition in a women’s magazine in 2008. I decided to enter and was fortunate enough to win the competition. The prize? The publication of my story. I wrote my first English romance, Love, in writing a year later and it was published in November 2013, also by Escape Publishing.

Tell us a little more about Touched To The Heart:
When it comes to men, if physiotherapist Caitlin Sutherland didn’t have bad luck, she would have no luck at all. To help cope, Caitlin starts blogging in her spare time, about the types of men she meets and the bad dates she goes on. While on duty during the annual Wines to Whales bicycle race, a gorgeous, sweaty cyclist walks in and sets her hormones dancing. But he is Don Cavallo; one of the four Cavallo brothers — hotel tycoons, famous as much for their business skills as for the number of beauties regularly seen on their arms. Don Cavallo has his own issues with the other sex. He has yet to find one who is interested in him and not in his money or hotels. But when this sexy physio puts her hands on his back she not only touches his body, but also his heart. They’ve both been burned before, but neither of them can stop themselves from playing with fire.

Some of the best love affairs come from taking a risk and certainly the central characters, Caitlin and Don play with fire when it comes to falling for each other. What was your favourite aspect of writing each character?
Caitlin’s dad left them when she was still at school and she has a hard time trusting men. When she meets Don though, the sparks fly and she has to find a way to overcome this problem. I loved getting into her head to try and figure out what needs to happen for her to be able to trust a man. My favourite part when writing about Don (apart from the fact that he is drop-dead gorgeous) was when he realises he loves Caitlin. But he also realises she needs to trust him and that is something she has to figure out for herself.

What one character trait will most endear Caitlin and Don to readers?
Don is one of those rock-solid men we’d all love to meet. And I trust readers will appreciate how brave Caitlin is when she throws her issues overboard and trusts her heart.

One thing you’d like readers to know about the romance genre…
In spite of all the negative things being written and said about the genre, it is the one genre that is nearly exclusively written by women for women.

If you weren’t writing, what would you be doing?
Driving my husband and kids mad 🙂

Biggest accomplishment to date:
In life? Our three amazing and interesting kids are doing their thing out there.

In writing? I’ve won a prize in 2010 for my first Afrikaans romance and have been nominated again for this year.

What’s next for you?
Don is one of four brothers and I simply have to tell Dale’s, David’s and Darryn’s stories as well. So I’m working on these.

Confessions of an Author:

Favourite snack whilst writing?
Tea and rusks

Is there something we’d be shocked to know about you?
I love country music 🙂

What do you find easiest to write? And, the hardest?
I’ve always had these voices in my head having endless conversations, so I find writing dialogue quite easy. Love scenes are more challenging for me – finding new ways to describe making love.

Favourite travel experience?
Tuscany

Favourite fictional character:
Peter Pan

Number one thing to do on your bucket list:
Swim with dolphins

Milk, dark or white chocolate? Dark

Red, white, bubbly? Bubbly

Salty or sweet? Sweet

Beach or mountains? Beach

Give or receive? Give

About the Author:
I have been reading love stories for as long as I can remember and when I ‘met’ the classic authors like Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry James The Brontë sisters, etc. during my studies, I was hooked for life. I married my college boyfriend and soul mate and after 39 years, 3 beautiful children and 3 grandchildren, he still makes me weak in the knees. We are fortunate to live in the picturesque little seaside village of Betty’s Bay, South Africa with the ocean a block away and a beautiful mountain right behind us. And although life so far has not always been an easy ride, it has always been an exiting and interesting one!

I like the heroines in my stories to be beautiful, feisty, independent and headstrong.  And the heroes must be strong but possess a generous amount of sensitivity. They are of course, also gorgeous!  My stories typically incorporate the family background of the characters to better understand where they come from and who they are when we meet them in the story.
