Author Spotlight: SE Gilchrist
Describe yourself in one word:
What is your background with regard to writing?
During my teenage years I scribbled down stories about girls and horses. Then for years I relatively did nothing until the urge to write nibbled at the corners of mind – I guess I was too busy raising children to think of anything else! At first it was more of a hobby, an interest but then gradually I become more involved in the characters and their lives that insisted had to be told.
When did you first begin writing with a view of embarking on a career as a published author?
January 2008 – I decided to stop procrastinating and pursue my hobby in a more professional-type manner. I joined the RWA and undertook on-line courses and bought large quantities of how-to books.
Tell us a little more about When Stars Collide:
The war between the Darkons and their enemies is heading towards the final confrontation. The gate-way maps believed to contain the co-ordinates for travel back to Earth are still missing. The heroine, Reece, has been recruited as a spy and charged with sniffing out the maps location. At the time the story begins, her goal is to save sufficient money to establish herself in a cushy lifestyle and on a planet far away from the war and any Darkon. It all becomes a little bit tricky, when my hero enters and finds her crouched over the butchered body of the most wanted criminal in the Seven Galaxies. And she’s holding a knife in her hands. What Stars Collide contains love, passion, action, adventure, political intrigue, betrayal and revenge.
What sparked the concept of When Stars Collide?
I wanted to finish off the external story line that carried through from Legend Beyond the Stars and Star Pirate’s Justice in a satisfying and hopefully ‘explosive’ finale. And I also wanted to portray the main villain of the piece and give him a more major role. So far he’s worked in the shadows or behind his henchmen. I also needed to tie in a few threads I’d left dangling from earlier books. I decided I needed a ‘darker’ more ‘angst driven’ hero and looked at the minor characters from the other stories and found exactly who I was looking for in Ulrac. It was pretty easy then to decide on the type of heroine I needed who would push all his buttons and lift the darkness in his soul.
What one character trait will most endear Reece and Ulrac to your readers?
Teasing: Reece loves to tease, initially to irritate Ulrac, punish him even, to push him as hard and far as she possibly can but later in the book, she wants to make him smile. And he soon learns to give back as good as he gets!
When Stars Collide is the third full-length novel in your current sci-fi series; where do you find the inspiration to keep coming up with fresh futuristic stories?
My problem is I have too many ideas and too little time. Inspiration for me, can be triggered by just about anything, an article on new tech or a break through in science, music, pictures of places / people, even a title or a chance sentence will give me a glimmer of an idea.
One thing you’d like readers to know about the romance genre…
Romance covers such a wide range of genres now, there’s bound to be a story line that will satisfy everyone.
If you weren’t writing, what would you be doing?
Painting, more bushwalking and kayaking.
What’s next for you?
I’m currently writing, Touring the Stars, a novella set in the Darkon world, finishing off Beyond Aquarius, the first book in my next series which is set on Earth and follows on from When Stars Collide. I also have another rural contemp romance in the pipe-line and am editing a NA sci fi / apocalyptic story, Don’t Look Back..

When Stars Collide
Reece, contortionist bubble dancer and part-time spy, has one goal – a safe haven and independent life far from the war. But her plans go awry and her future becomes dangerously uncertain when she is falsely accused of the murders of her friend and a Darkon traitor. Now her new list of goals includes payback.
In her way is Ulrac, a banished Darkon patroller responsible for incarcerating females for barbaric ‘treatments’ and ‘research’ on the planet Isla. He’s determined to use the capture of the spy and her intel to win the approval of his father – a hard-line Traditionalist with his own agenda – and help him overthrow the current ruler of Darkos.
But the war of the Seven Galaxies has reached a critical stage, and personal plans and goals suddenly hold very little meaning. The enemy is poised to unleash a terrible weapon and no one stands between him and total domination of all the universes.
No one – except Reece and Ulrac.
