Author Spotlight: JB Heller
Describe yourself in one word:
What is your background with regard to writing?
I don’t have much really. I started out as an avid reader. I’ve always had a vivid imagination and the more I read the more my imagination ran wild. So I decided to start putting the stories in my head on paper.
When did you first begin writing with a view of embarking on a career as a published author?
I always wanted to publish my stories. From the very beginning, as soon as I started writing I was also researching how to go about self-publishing.
Tell us a little more about Vipers Den:
I am so in love with this series. I personally like being able to read a book in one sitting. I have three little kids and finding time is often difficult. But when I do, I want to know the whole story. I often get annoyed having to stretch one book out over a whole week. So that’s what I had in mind when I began writing this series. Vipers Den is an alternative beauty salon. All the staff are… let’s say unique. Each book focuses on a different staff member. Why they have the eccentricities that they do and finding their perfect match.
When we meet Piper, she’s slowly working her way through a dwindling list of blind dates set up by her mother when Kade Benson arrives on the scene with a genius plan… what inspired this aspect of the story?
So in my head I knew Piper didn’t like Kade. And honestly I understood her reasoning. I have big brothers and at times I felt like their friends took them away from me. So for Kade to get her to even consider a relationship with him, he had to be smart about it. I was lying in bed when the perfect solution came to mind so I jumped up and scribbled it down in my note book.
What were the key challenges in writing Piper and Kade’s story?
There was so much chemistry between them, and I had to make sure they kept their hands off each other long enough to build a relationship that was based on more than just the physical stuff.
What one character trait will most endear both Piper and Kade to your readers?
For Piper, her strength. And for Kade, his loyalty.
What do you want readers to know about the romance genre?
Romance has progressed into something new and exciting in the last few years. It’s a whole new world so to speak. When I was younger the thought of opening a romance novel made me want to stick my finger down my throat. But now, I dive right in!
If you weren’t writing, what would you be doing?
I’ve tried many different careers. Nothing felt as right as this. But to answer your question, I’d probably just be making sure all my folding was done and my floors would get mopped more regularly.
What’s next for you?
I’ll be reworking some older books that I previously published under a different pen name. I’ve also got four or five more books in the Vipers Den series to write. So busy busy for me.
What book is currently on your nightstand?
Umm I just finished Tempting the bodyguard by Jennifer L Armentrout. And I’m about to dive into Love by Lacey Weatherford.
What advice would you give your 16-year-old self?
Oh this is a good one! I’d probably tell myself that everything will work out the way it should in time. And to just roll with it.
It’s almost Christmas (yes, already!), tell us: what are you hoping to find under the tree this year?
I actually don’t celebrate X-mas. But my wedding anniversary is just a few days later so for that I’m hoping I get a weekend away with the hubs… Kiddie free.
Favourite Christmas recipe?
I don’t really have one, although I love that the shops stock Magical Elves chocolates at Christmas time so I load my freezer up with them!
Share with us your biggest New Years Resolution for 2015:
To get fit. I know that sounds lame, but my youngest just turned two and I’m not allowed to have anymore children so it’s time to do something about my budda belly. Lol
Favourite travel experience?
I went to Europe in 2010. It was amazing. I love all the history over there. Best part was doing a weekend in Paris with one of my best and oldest friends. We stayed in a backpackers and roamed the streets, eating in local restaurants that were hidden away from the tourist district and having fresh croissants for breakfast. Oh and the fresh crepes with Nutella and banana- OMG FOODGASYM!
Number one thing to do on your bucket list:
I’m determined to meet my American soul mates, T J Tims & Faith S Lynn, face to face. Those two have been amazing inspirations to me and supported me 100% in my writing career.
Milk, dark or white chocolate? Dark!
Red, white, bubbly? Bubbly.
About the Author:
I’m a regular Aussie chic, with a spunky husband and a few kids. I’ve worked in many different fields, trying to find my niche. But nothing felt right until now. I have found my fit. I am passionate about reading as well as writing and I have gained some incredibly inspiring friends from this journey. I write contemporary romance with a bit of spice to keep things interesting. I like to write fun, interesting characters that grab your attention from the very beginning. I hope you enjoy reading my books as much as I enjoy writing them. X
I’m Piper Jones, owner and operator or Vipers’ Den; a hair and beauty salon catering to the unconventional. My clients are often referred to as: eccentric, freaks, or misfits.
I’m also single, a fact my mother is less than pleased with. Making it her mission to change my status, she continually sets me up on dates with her friend’s offspring. Only her roster of “gems” is dwindling. Each date is worse than the last.
Then Kade Benson, the one man I have loathed for as long as I can remember, approached me with the most asinine (borderline genius) plan I’d ever heard to rectify both of our situations.
As ludicrous as it is, it might just work.
However, I never expected things to work out the way they did.
