AUSSIE MONTH: Imelda Evans
AUSSIE MONTH with Imelda Evans
Describe yourself in one word:
Curious
What is your background with regard to writing?
One way or another I’ve written in most of the jobs I’ve done, even if it was only press releases. But my main background is in copywriting, which I did for ten years before turning to fiction. I’ve been working on novels seriously since 2011 and so far, I have two romances published and several more projects in progress.
Tell us about Rules are for Breaking:
Rules are for Breaking is a contemporary romance about Jo, a woman who’s decided that she’s off men for the forseeable future and Declan, a man who’s decided that Jo is the woman for him. Jo’s got a lot of baggage on the subject of men, but most of it she doesn’t even know she’s carrying and it takes all of Declan’s determination to get past her defences.
What inspired this novel?
I know a lot of great women who are ‘accidentally single.’ Kind, funny, intelligent, attractive women, with careers and lives but, for one reason or another, without partners. I want to know why that is, when I know there are also men in the same position. This story was an exploration of one possible answer.
What are you reading right now?
I have a few on the go at the moment! An Unsuitable Match by Sasha Cottman, Nefarious Doings, by Ilsa Evans and, just to mix things up, a non-fiction book called Seven Elements that have changed the world, by John Browne.
Number one thing to do on your bucket list?
I’d like see the sun set over Uluru. I have seen a lot of the East coast of Australia and this year I went to the Barrier Reef for the first time, but I’ve never been to the centre.
Best thing about being an Aussie?
The Australian sense of humour and willingness to laugh at ourselves. Very important to staying sane. We also have wonderful food, wine and beer!
What you want readers to know about the romance genre?
That if you’ve never read it, you should give it a go. It’s almost certainly broader, deeper and better than you think. There are some mighty fine writers among those of us who like a happy ending and with so many sub-genres, there are certain to be some you like!
What have you got in store for your readers in 2015?
Last year was the year of starting new projects, so this year I’m hoping to finish one crime novel, one romance and one young adult book, as well as a few short stories. I’m also starting a new, year-long project on my blog soon, so there’ll always be something new happening!
What were your big achievements of 2014?
Surviving it! Personally, 2014 was a little rough, so professionally, it was a little slow. But as they say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger – so I’m looking forward to exercising my new muscles this year.
Rules are for Breaking
Imelda Evans
Jo is a smart and determined young woman with a clear-eyed view of men and what she expects of them. Put simply, she is over searching for ‘The One’. When challenged by a friend who thinks she can’t do it, Jo goes one step further and vows not to date, sleep with or even kiss a man for six weeks.
Enter Declan, Jo’s gorgeous yet unwelcome house guest. Convinced he can win her over, Declan views Jo and her vow as an irresistible challenge.
An infuriated Jo declares that Declan is like all the others – attracted to her for all the wrong reasons. She insists that he devote time to getting to know the real her and to doing the things she loves. Will Declan survive the test? Or will a major misunderstanding spoil everything?
Rules Are For Breaking is a witty, entertaining romance certain to have even the most disenchanted believing in love again.
