Build Us Your Ideal Story with Alli Sinclair

In my twenties “budget” was a swear word but now that I’m … uh … not in my twenties (let’s not worry about which decade I’m currently in) I have learnt to be more frugal. I’m happy to say I didn’t blow my budget for the ideal story! Here’s my list based on my new release,

$5 Relatable, likeable female leads

Under the Spanish Stars has dual storylines that crossover. Charlotte is the heroine in the present day story and Katarina, Charlotte’s grandmother, features in the historical story that is set in 1940s Spain during World War II.

Charlotte is friendly, caring, loves her family and friends but has hang ups just like everyone. As an insurance risk assessor, Charlotte has let that aspect of her job bleed into her personal life and finds it difficult to get out of her comfort zone. So when she’s forced to face her fears head on, it’s a super difficult task. She makes mistakes but never gives up—a trait I find a lot of readers enjoy.

Katarina, Charlotte’s grandmother, features in the historical story and she’s a feisty character who is fearless and takes risks—a stark contrast to Charlotte. But Katarina hasn’t always been like this. Family circumstance has forced her to change and she’s not always comfortable with her new persona. Most of us have had times when we’ve changed our way of thinking or doing things because of outside influences and Katarina’s struggle with finding her true self is something many readers can relate to.

$3 Conflict that forces personal growth

Charlotte desperately wants to find out who she truly is and what she wants in life. She dreams of a contented future but in order to get that she has to face a few home truths. Although she doesn’t believe she’s ready for it, Charlotte is way stronger than she thinks. However, Charlotte can’t take her journey of growing until her grandmother has her own forced personal growth at the age of ninety-six.

Katarina has spent decades denying her past and connection to war-torn Spain. When she suffers a heart attack, she reassesses aspects of her life that she’s buried deep within. The only way to find the peace she craves is to solve the mystery behind a one-hundred-year-old painting. As Katarina is ill, she sends Charlotte to their ancestral home of Spain to solve the mystery and in the process, both women discover more about themselves than they could ever have imagined.

$1 Unbreakable connection between lovers

There are two love stories in Under the Spanish Stars. There’s the new romance between Charlotte and the handsome and charming flamenco guitarist, Mateo. Then there’s the decades old romance between Katarina and her lover, Raul. Of course, the path of love never runs smooth but the connection these characters have for one another transcends time and geography.

$1 Emotionally charged love affair

In Under the Spanish Stars it’s a two for the price of one deal when it comes to emotionally charged love affairs. Charlotte and Mateo’s love for each other is challenged by their different cultures, geography and beliefs. Their connection is strong and they work hard to be together—even though plenty of obstacles are thrown in their way.  But is their love strong enough to override their differences?

Katarina and Raul’s love is emotionally charged with war-torn Spain, family, and politics trying to keep them apart. They bond over their love for flamenco but that alone may not be strong enough for them to stay together forever. Will they or won’t they?

An Australian woman’s life-changing journey, a secret from the past, a passionate encounter…

Charlotte Kavanagh’s beloved grandma Katarina Sanchez is gravely ill, so when she begs Charlotte to travel to her homeland in Andalucía to uncover the truth behind a mysterious painting, Charlotte agrees. Taking leave from her soul-destroying job and stalled life in Australia, Charlotte embarks on a quest through Granada’s ancient cobble-stoned streets and vibrant neighbourhoods. There she meets Mateo Vives, a flamenco guitarist with a dark past, and quickly becomes entangled in the world of flamenco and gypsies that ignites a passion she had thought lost.

But the mystery surrounding the painting deepens, reaching back in time to the war-torn Spain of the 1940s and Charlotte discovers her grandmother’s connection to the Spanish underground. Who is her grandmother, really? What is Mateo’s connection to her family history? And why is finding answers to a family mystery turning into a journey of self-discovery for Charlotte?

Weighed down by secrets, betrayals and shattered relationships, Charlotte finds herself questioning the true meaning of heritage, family and love.
