Describe Girl in Between in one word:
Hilarious

 

Girl in Between tells the story of Lucy Crighton, a girl who is in between relationships, cities, and careers, who has just moved in with some familiar housemates—her parents… Between heartbreak, being broke, and dealing with her nosy parents, Lucy does discover some truths about herself and what she wants in life. What sparked this concept for you?
I was in my early thirties when I wrote Girl in Between, and it was a stage of life where I kept hearing the same concerns and hopes echoed throughout my circle of friends…the quest to find the ideal partner, the deliberations over cities and career choices, the wistful yearnings to be back in the carefree days of your early twenties! And so I decided to write a book based around these themes.

 

Girl in Between explores the importance of female friendship. What significance do you think friendship plays for women in 2017, and do you think this has changed throughout the years?
I think female friendship has always been incredibly important for women, but I think in 2017, and this decade, where women are staying single for longer or choosing not to have children, or to have them later, that female friendship really steps up and plays an amazing, often crucial role, in a woman’s life.

 

What was your biggest challenge in writing Girl in Between?
Apart from cracking up with some of the ridiculous one-liners I was writing, my biggest challenge was transforming Girl in Between from a novella of 38,000 words to a romantic-comedy novel of over 80,000 words. Luckily I was bouncing ideas off the wonderful and witty Louise Thurtell, my publisher at Allen & Unwin.

 

What’s next for you?
I would love to see Girl in Between turned into a screenplay! I’ve written it in a way that it’s very visual, with lots of funny, laugh-out-loud dialogue, and I can see it playing out as a romantic-comedy TV series! There has already been some interest shown from Australian production companies, and the rights to publish Girl in Between have been acquired in Germany, so I can only keep my fingers crossed for this next dream!

Anna Daniels has enjoyed great success as a comedic storyteller since kicking off her career by winning the ABC’s ‘Comedy Segment of the Year Award’ for an interview with Russell Crowe. She then went on to co-create the ABC’s first online sketch comedy series ‘Tough at the Top’ with Melbourne comedian, Anne Edmonds. For several years Anna wrote and presented funny upbeat stories for The Project, winning over viewers with her warm, silly, endearing style. Having grown up in Rockhampton, she particularly championed the stories and characters of rural and regional Australia with affection and humour. As well as The Project, Anna has written, presented and/or produced radio, TV and online content for Queensland Weekender, Red Symons’ Breakfast Show, and the BBC One series, ‘John Bishop’s Australia’. Life can be tricky when you’re a girl in between relationships, careers and cities … and sometimes you have to face some uncomfortable truths. The sparkling debut from comic TV and radio presenter, Anna Daniels.
