2017 Christmas Extravaganza featuring Renee Conoulty

In Gotta Be This or That, all Macie needs for Christmas is to figure out what she wants. I know what I want for Christmas this year, but I’m not going to get it. I want my husband home for Christmas but Santa had to grant the wishes of the Royal Australian Air Force over mine. They need him on the other side of the world.

This will be the first Christmas we haven’t spent together since we met. But it probably won’t be the last one we’re separated. That’s something I had to accept when he joined the military – this great new career with lots of job security also comes with sacrifices. But there are always two ways to look at things. Frequent relocation could be seen as uprooting the family or a new adventure. During separations you could focus on feeling lonely or use them as a chance to grow. It was our first military posting to Darwin that inspired me to start writing and the frequent separations that gave me extra time to complete my debut novel, Don’t Mean a Thing.

This year I’ll decorate the tree alone (well, I’ll let the kids do it, then rearrange the ornaments when they’re not looking). I’ll wrap the presents I bought for myself and write “love Luke” on them. I’ll nibble Santa’s bickie with my mum instead of my husband and leave half chewed carrots on her lawn instead of ours. We’ll pull Christmas crackers in pairs, Nanny and Poppy, Tom and Molly, my left hand and my right hand. That will be Christmas Part 1.

The tree won’t come down in the first week of January this time, though. It will stay up for a few more weeks because there’s still Christmas Part 2. We’ll save some presents under the tree and I’ll cook another roast lunch. Santa won’t return, but we can still nibble bickies after the kids go to bed. I’ll get my wish of seeing my husband mid deployment, it will just be a few weeks after Christmas. He’ll bring little surprises for all of us that I didn’t wrap (probably more toy camels). And I’ll get to unwrap the best present of all… After the kids go to sleep…
