Interviewing New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Bella Andre is quite an extraordinary experience; an access-all-areas pass if you will. Open and willing to discuss many aspects of her wordsmith career, Andre herself maintains a plethora of information about self-publishing that is remarkably enviable. One particular sentiment stuck with me; Bella Andre epitomises hard work and determination. When asked recently about the most challenging aspect of self publishing, Andre stated that she “works all the time.”

Having discovered Game For Love in 2012, I quickly became an Andre fan and set about to download as many of her books as possible. Her ability to structure and portray characters, both broadly and down to the smallest nuances, struck a chord with me immediately. The strength of Andre’s storylines and storytelling simply sealed the deal.

Recently at the San Francisco Writer’s Conference where Andre appeared as keynote speaker, she reportedly commented that at one point in her digital publishing career, her book sales hit $25,000-50,000 a day; a streak that ran for months.

Other than her dedicated approach to writing and clear work ethics, Andre attributes self-publishing as the key to her success, “My career began to take off once I was able to take charge of my own destiny and reach readers directly”. Andre’s relationship with her fans also holds an important key to her success; Andre is an active social media user however it is her one-on-one engagement that has garnered most success. Asked about effective self-promotion, Andre reveals that she often sends a personal email to every reader who has ever written her when her new titles releases. The email will reference their last correspondence so that the reader knows that this is no automated, stock response; a time consuming albeit effective marketing tool.

So, what does Bella Andre writing process involve? “A quick first draft and then many revisions”. Andre also uses beta readers and critique partners, hired copyediting and “many, many proofreaders”
